AMARAVATI — Five young individuals lost their lives after drowning in the Tungabhadra river during a weekend swimming outing. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday when a group of friends entered the deep waters near the riverbanks, misjudging the strength of the undercurrents.

Local eyewitnesses stated that the victims rushed into the water to escape the intense summer heat. Within minutes, a few members of the group began to struggle in the deep channels.

Despite attempts by onlookers to rescue them, five individuals were quickly swept away by the swift river currents before emergency teams could arrive at the location.

Local police and personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) quickly launched a coordinated search and rescue operation along the river stretch.

Teams deployed deep-sea divers and boats to scan the waters, recovering the bodies of the deceased after several hours of intensive searching. The authorities have sent the bodies to a nearby government hospital for post-mortem examinations.
