Worsening climate change is the primary driver behind the extreme heatwaves sweeping across India, stated United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Executive Secretary Simon Stiell.

He stressed that these intense environmental shifts heavily impact vulnerable populations, especially those living in homes without cooling infrastructure or working long hours outdoors.

"These extremes drive home the importance of measures to adapt to climate impacts, globally," Mr. Stiell said in an official statement.

His observations match warnings from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which indicated that severe heatwave conditions would likely persist over central and northwest India.

The soaring temperatures have triggered a critical surge in electricity usage. Peak power demand repeatedly hit historic highs, reaching a record 270.8 GW on May 21.
