Manila / General Santos City, 8 June 2026 — A strong 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck offshore southern Mindanao in the Philippines early Monday morning, causing significant damage in General Santos City and prompting immediate tsunami warnings across coastal areas.

The quake, which struck at approximately 7:37 a.m. local time, was centred 24–26 kilometres west-southwest of Burias in Sarangani province, at a depth of about 35 kilometres, according to the United States Geological Survey and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

Video footage circulating on social media showed partial collapses of buildings, including a Jollibee restaurant in General Santos City, along with shattered windows and fallen debris. Power outages were reported across parts of the city, and the local airport was temporarily closed. At least three deaths and several injuries have been confirmed, with officials verifying reports of up to five fatalities as rescue operations continue.
