TIRUPATI: In a powerful symbolic gesture aimed at fostering social harmony and eradicating caste-based discrimination, the ancient ritual of 'Munivahana Seva' was successfully replicated at the Sri Kalyana Venkateswara Swamy temple in Srinivasa Mangapuram near Tirupati.

The historic event, organized under the aegis of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) and the Alwar Divya Prabandha Project, drew hundreds of devotees and spiritual leaders who gathered to witness the age-old tradition being adapted for modern social reform.

The essence of the ritual dates back nearly 2,700 years, originating from an incident involving the revered Vaishnavite saint Lokasaranga Saranga Maharshi and Tiruppan Alwar, a devout untargeted devotee who belonged to an marginalized community.

In a reenactment of this profound historical narrative, a prominent temple priest, accompanied by traditional nadaswaram music and Vedic chants, carried a Dalit devotee on his shoulders directly into the inner sanctum of the temple.

The gesture served as a public demonstration that devotion transcends all social hierarchies and that spiritual spaces belong equally to all sections of society.
